In the last 10 years or so we have witnessed huge changes in the way we do business, buy and sell goods and services and access services. The phenomenal growth of the Internet has made the world a small village today. Telecommuting is no longer a mere idea.
Recently I was talking with the Technical Director of one of the leading Drupal development companies in the Australia & NZ region. We discussed the possibility of working together and outsourcing Drupal development services to India.
Now this company already has Drupal developers working remotely from various parts of Australia. (They do this in order to get the best Drupal developers from all over Australia). These Drupal developers work remotely and in a collaborative environment, and the company has developed methodologies and processes by which the collaboration and the service delivery is a smooth affair.
The big question for them was, “Can we get delivery and collaboration in the same way from offshore?”
He said he doesn’t mind considering offshoring smaller Drupal projects (typically in the $20,000 range), but when it comes to projects in the million dollar range, he was worried about the risk involved.
My suggestion to clients like him is always to start with a small project and see how things work out. This will help you to get started on a relationship, get an understanding of how the teams work, and so on. From our experience, there will inevitably be teething troubles in the first two or three projects that you outsource. But the learning curve improves with the understanding and experience gained from these initial projects and thereafter it is generally a smooth process. We have many success stories to (confidentially) share about white labelled Offshore Drupal Development that we have undertaken.
Vesa Palmu of Wunderkraut (acknowledged as Europe’s leading Drupal Developer) wrote in one of his blogs in Wunderkraut website that offshore Drupal developers beyond the region don’t ‘think’ but just deliver what they are asked to do. (I met Vesa in DrupalCon Sydney in 2013 and listened to his excellent talk on Agile development, but more on that later.)
However, I have to respectfully disagree with Palmu on his take on offshore Drupal developers. It all depends on the quality of the programmers, their exposure and the organisational culture. Both Oracle and Microsoft, for example,
do many of their important product development in India. They come to India not for cost savings alone but for software developers and engineers of the highest quality – people that are innovative and brilliant.
A quote from www.itoutsourcingindia.com brings out this point better: “A lot of people focus on India for lower costs. What is remarkable in India is the caliber of the computer engineers. The cost savings were an additional benefit on top of that.” Larry Ellison, Founder and CEO, Oracle.
